Stoke-Sub-Hamdon is a parish in the hundred of Tintinhull, county Somerset, 5½ miles N.W. of Yeovil, and 2 S. of Martock railway station. The village, which is large, is situated on the river Parret. Many of the female inhabitants are engaged in glove making, but agriculture is the principal industry. The town provides good entertainment, dining and sports facilities. Stoke-sub-Hamdon (or Stoke sub Hamdon) is a village in South Somerset, situated five miles west of Yeovil, England. It is located near the River Parrett. The village stretches around Ham Hill. It is the site of the 14th century Stoke sub Hamdon Priory. The church, dedicated to St. Denis, has a tower and five bells. It shows various medieval carving including abstract corbels, an astrological tympanum, and St Michael slaying the dragon. Two of the carvings are thought to be Sheila-na-gigs.
