Lewes is a town in the Lewes district of East Sussex in south-east England. It is the county town of East Sussex, though it is much smaller than several other towns in the county. Lewes railway station opened in 1846. It is on the East Coastway Line. Lewes Farmers' Market, one of the first in the UK, was started in the 1990s by Common Cause Co-operative Ltd [2] and is a very popular re-invention of Lewes as a market town. The name Lewes comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "Hlew", which means "Hill". The town is indeed largely built on a hill. The town was the site of the Battle of Lewes in 1264. It is the location of several historic buildings, including Lewes Castle, the remains of Lewes Priory, and the so-called "Anne of Cleves House" (given to the divorced queen but never lived in by her). Lewes is also the headquarters of the Sussex Archaeological Society. It is the County Town of the historic county of Sussex. More on Lewes
